How To Repair Laptop Battery

As with all energy storage devices, laptop batteries eventually become less and less capable of holding a charge. A repair laptop battery is usually more cost-effective than replacing it entirely if you are able to keep the circuitry that controls it. There is usually a battery check program on most laptop computers that lets you determine the condition of the battery. When one or more cells are not able to charge or have lost their capacity, the program will recommend replacing the battery.

How to Repair Laptop Battery in Five Steps

Battery status should be checked

In case the battery status checker program is not already installed on your computer, you should download it and install it. A report will be generated following the execution of the program regarding the overall condition of the battery. A single faulty cell can shorten the overall lifespan of the laptop battery pack. It is important to run the check on each battery separately if your laptop has more than one battery. Be sure to read and understand your warranty agreement before repairing your laptop battery.

The laptop battery should be drained and removed

Remove your computer’s battery from the power source after it has been fully drained. By doing this, you ensure that all of the cells will be charged evenly before you install the new components. Remove the battery pack from its back with a screwdriver. Power cells whose chemical composition and power rating match the manufacturer’s recommendation will prevent damage to your laptop. Make sure you record the model number of the battery and the part number of each cell so that you can order the correct replacement.

Old cells should be removed

Make sure the plastic enclosing the power cells is cut open with a utility knife. Make sure the laptop battery is charged in order for any data in the memory to remain intact, such as resistor value or fuel gauge, before removing the battery cells from the battery tray and connecting their lead wires. To ensure the circuit stays powered, you must maintain a secondary source of power during the cycle of replacing worn-out cells. Connect the wires in the correct order after disconnecting and reconnecting them. To identify which connections are positive, negative, clock, and data for the battery circuit, you will probably need to use a voltmeter.

You need to install the new cells

Attach the electrical contacts to the cells, cover them with plastic and place the new cells on the tray. Generally, batteries remain in the correct position, but if the wires were damaged when the batteries were removed, you may need to bond them back into place. Avoiding excess heat is important when soldering to avoid damaging cells or electrical circuits. Assemble the battery pack housing again.

The battery must be installed

Identify whether your battery has a switch for turning it on and off. If you cannot turn on your laptop battery when the circuit is connected to the ground, you may have to request a special code from the manufacturer. Make sure your charger is compatible and that the polarization is correct. When the cells have a different state of charge, you should use a slow charge. If the cells have different chemical properties or are damaged, you should never attempt to charge them. Before using the laptop, make sure the batteries are fully charged.
